Binti by Nnedi Okorafor

Many of us do not like mathematics, too many mind boggling equations to store in our heads. Binti is a young Himba woman whose entire life and clan revolves around equations and what is known as ‘treeing’. Her family has always produced the people who are known as master harmonisers – peace keepers – and as she has inherited the gene from her father, She is expected to stay home, take over her father’s business, get married and make babies. No one has ever left home and she is expected to continue that tradition.

So, when she gains admission into the prestigious Oomza University, her family tells her outright that she cannot go and the matter is dismissed. No one expects Binti to sneak away in the middle of the night to pursue her dream. She comes in contact with the Meduse – a feared, dangerous tribe – and must use her skills as master harmoniser to broker peace between tribes in a war that she knows nothing about if she is to get to her destination alive.

Binti has not prepared for any of the things that she will come in contact with and will deal with this even as she faces the reality that her family might never accept her as one of their own after leaving home.

Nnedi explores the awesomeness of science in this book and perfectly describes the importance of following your dreams no matter what.

Readers will find some parts of it relatable and some parts funny.

Nnedi Okorafor is brilliantly descriptive in this book. Readers will find themselves walking alongside Binti as she rides on the Third Fish, as she walks in the desert and negotiates her peace deal.

I loved it! I’m going to give it 5 stars for complete awesomeness.

BLURB

Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs.

Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares. Oomza University has wronged the Meduse, and Binti’s stellar travel will bring her within their deadly reach.

If Binti hopes to survive the legacy of a war not of her making, she will need both the gifts of her people and the wisdom enshrined within the University, itself – but first she has to make it there, alive.
